Melatonin, Powder known chemically as N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine is a naturally occurring hormone that is found in many animals, plants and microbes. Melatonin is categorized by the FDA as a dietary supplement and is not regulated as a pharmaceutical drug. There have been several studies done on melatonin as a potential treatment of gastro-esophageal reflux disease, cancer, immune disorders, cardiovascular disease, depression, seasonal affective disorder, sleep disorders, sexual dysfunction and insomnia. Results have shown that prolonged release of melatonin produces good results in treating insomnia in the elderly.
