Sulfamethoxazole is a sulfonamide bacteriostatic antibiotic that acts as an antibacterial agent, an antiinfective agent, an epitope, etc. It is most commonly seen when used in combination with trimethoprim as the drug Bactrim. It is useful for the treatment of bacterial infections, specifically those of the urinary, respiratory, and gastrointestinal tracts.
