Gamma-methylene-gamma-butyrolactone, also known as 5-methylenedihydro-2(5H)-furanone, is a chemical compound with the formula C5H6O2, and is a colorless to almost colorless clear liquid. It’s a cyclic ester with a five-membered ring containing four carbon atoms and one oxygen atom, with a methylene group (CH2) attached to one of the carbon atoms. It’s used as a synthetic intermediate and can be polymerized. Alpha-Methylene-gamma-butyrolactone is not a naturally occurring metabolite and is only found in individuals exposed to this compound or its derivatives.
